State Senator Hunter Feeds Hungry Minds
By Eloise Baird

As members awaited the arrival of Senator Mattie Hunter at the SPPS annual meeting the evening of April 26th, we nibbled on fresh pineapple, pretzels and bottled water. Considering the Senator’s quest to bring healthier food choices into public schools, it seemed appropriate that we should enjoy healthy snacks. She arrived, on time, to share her challenges and successes as Senator for District 3 with the diverse group that had gathered.

Two years ago, as the Vice Chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and a freshman Senator, Mattie Hunter sponsored Senate Bills 1589 and 2940 which address obesity and nutrition in schoolchildren. You may recall that this was the year Chicago was ranked the fattest city in the nation. Although there were opponents to her efforts, the Senator persisted, and both these visionary bills passed and have been signed into law.

Senator Hunter has collaborated with the Healthy Schools Campaign to sponsor bills requiring the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois State Board of Education to work together in developing school health policies. Coincidentally, the founding Executive Director of the Healthy Schools Campaign, Rochelle Davis, is the wife of our national Parents for Public Schools’ Executive Director.

Judging by the turnout at our annual meeting, the issue of healthy food choices in our schools is important to our membership. The Senator followed her presentation with a question and answer session. Topics covered ranged from the popular “Supersize Me” movie, to a discussion about Prader Willi Syndrome. She lingered afterward to speak individually to several interested members. The Senator left us with a mission: model healthy eating and exercise for our children. We applaud her efforts and share her vision of a healthy future for our children.
